13 sites like Monkeytype for faster, cleaner typing

Updated October 22, 2026 · 13 games, each checked on its maker's site · 7 min read

Monkeytype is the typing test that keyboard enthusiasts settled on: a calm block of words, a caret that glides, and a result screen full of numbers, from words per minute to consistency. It began in May 2020 as a project its creator, Miodec, shared with a keyboard community, and it is still open source and free, with modes for timed tests, word counts, quotes, free typing and your own text, and close to two hundred colour themes. Ads are a setting you can switch off.

So why look elsewhere? Usually for something Monkeytype does not try to be: a race against other people, a trainer that drills your weakest keys, a whole book to type, or a game where typing is the weapon. This list covers all of those, and says for each one what it adds, what it lacks, and whether the parts you want cost money.

How we picked

A site made the list if it gives a Monkeytype regular something worth switching tabs for: a clean test, a better way to practise, real competition, or a game that rewards accurate speed. On October 22, 2026 we went through each one on its own site, GitHub page or Steam page, read how it measures speed, and noted what is free.

We skipped sites built mainly for school classes, typing tests that hide who runs them behind heavy ads, and abandoned projects that no longer load. Ratings are ours, out of 5, and favour sites that respect your time: few distractions, honest numbers and free features that matter.

1 of the 13 are games we make, marked Made by us · Gamefinity. They are rated on the same scale as the rest and placed where they honestly fit.

A quick second opinion on your speed

What it is

A minimal online typing test from the makers of the WhatPulse keystroke tracker, online since at least 2020. You type a stream of common words from a 100-word or a 1,000-word list, then see words per minute, raw speed, accuracy and character counts, with accounts, leaderboards and a newer multiplayer race.

Why it's like Monkeytype

It looks and scores most like Monkeytype: the same word-stream test and nearly the same definitions of WPM, raw WPM and accuracy, plus Discord roles for beating your one-minute best.

What's different

Fewer modes and settings, and it is not open source. Removing its ads takes a $2.99-a-month subscription, where Monkeytype lets you switch ads off for nothing.

Fixing slow keys and learning touch typing

What it is

A touch-typing trainer online since at least 2007 that records every keystroke and builds each lesson around your weakest letters. You start with a handful of frequent letters in made-up words and unlock a new letter once you are fast enough, with charts of your speed key by key. It also has a plain typing test and a race.

Why it's like Monkeytype

It has the same clean, keyboard-first screen, deep statistics and open-source code that Monkeytype fans appreciate, and many of them use it to get faster between tests.

What's different

It is a teacher rather than a test: lessons use generated practice words instead of real text, and letters arrive slowly. Ads show unless you buy its premium account, a one-time payment.

Racing real people

What it is

Live typing races running since March 2008. Everyone types the same quote from a book, film or song, a little car shows each player's progress, and you get your speed and place at the finish. There are practice races, private tracks for friends and competitions.

Why it's like Monkeytype

Typing real quotes for a WPM score is close to Monkeytype's quote mode, and saved history and leaderboards keep you coming back.

What's different

Everything is built around racing others rather than solo tests, with fewer settings. Ad-free play is a yearly plan, from $12 a year.

Typing tests in many languages

What it is

A long-running test site whose standard test is one minute of the 200 most common words in your language, in more than 40 languages. It also runs 24-hour competitions, live races for up to 20 players, text practice and a custom mode, and relaunched with a new version in April 2026.

Why it's like Monkeytype

Monkeytype's default test also draws on the 200 most common English words, so the two feel alike, and both have custom text and rankings.

What's different

The standard test is always one minute. It counts keystrokes, so capitals and accented letters add to your score, and results above 120 WPM need an anti-cheat check. Ads cannot be switched off.

A typing break that feels like a game

What it is

Words fall towards a neon skyline, and finishing a word fires a laser that knocks it out of the sky before it hits. Waves get faster, combos reward clean streaks, and the run ends when the city falls.

Why it's like Monkeytype

Speed and accuracy decide everything, just as in a test, and a wrong letter costs you, so the habits Monkeytype builds pay off straight away.

What's different

It is an arcade game, not a measurement: there is no WPM result, no modes and no settings to tune. Words arrive one at a time rather than as a passage.

The classic typing game

What it is

A space shooter from 2011 where every enemy ship carries a word: type its first letter to lock on and finish the word to destroy it, with an emergency bomb for when ships get too close. Waves grow faster and longer as you survive.

Why it's like Monkeytype

Pure typing skill wins it. Fast, accurate fingers are the only thing standing between you and the next wave.

What's different

There is no measured test, no themes and no modes, just short words under pressure. The web version shows ads; the iPhone app removes them for $0.99.

Learning a new layout or keyboard

What it is

A clean typing trainer from ZSA, the maker of the Moonlander and Voyager keyboards, soft-launched in October 2024 and usable on any keyboard. It has modes for prose, code, numbers and symbols, other languages and letter combinations, plus a daily challenge, all controlled by typed commands.

Why it's like Monkeytype

It shares Monkeytype's minimal look and keyboard-only control, with live speed and accuracy as you type.

What's different

It is a practice tool rather than a ranked test, aimed at people moving to a new layout. Its live view of your key layout only works with a ZSA keyboard.

What it is

Retype whole public-domain books, more than 80 in nine languages, from Frankenstein to Dracula, page by page with live speed and accuracy. Your place is saved, and a levelling system with more than 200 ranks marks your progress.

Why it's like Monkeytype

It is like a very long Monkeytype quote test: real prose, live numbers and a quiet, focused screen.

What's different

Sessions are long and story-driven, with no leaderboards. Importing your own books, custom text and themes need the $5-a-month premium plan, where Monkeytype's custom text and themes are free.

The barest possible test

What it is

A very small open-source typing test from 2019 with word-count and timed modes, a few languages and colour themes named after keycap sets. Shortcuts restart a test or repeat the same words.

Why it's like Monkeytype

In look and feel it is the closest to Monkeytype: a minimal word test, keycap-inspired themes (some share names with Monkeytype's) and the same open-source licence.

What's different

Far fewer features: no accounts, history, leaderboards, quotes or free-typing mode. Its code has not changed since 2022, though the site still works.

Longer tests and certificates

What it is

A typing site with timed tests from 30 seconds to 20 minutes, a number-pad test, custom text, a once-a-day challenge, lessons, small typing games and certificates. It publishes the formulas behind its results.

Why it's like Monkeytype

A free speed test with lots of lengths, custom text, detailed stats and leaderboards.

What's different

It reports net WPM, where uncorrected errors lower your speed, rather than Monkeytype's count of correctly typed words, so your number may differ. Ads show unless you pay about $2 a month, billed yearly.

Quick matches with a daily ladder

What it is

A multiplayer typing game from the company behind TypeRacer, with quick-play matches, custom lobbies with friends, daily competitions and challenges, levels, coins and a cosmetics shop. You race others on quotes, dictionary words or your own text.

Why it's like Monkeytype

It is aimed at the same speed-focused crowd, with smooth caret options, a focus mode and live WPM.

What's different

Matches are live races with progression and cosmetics rather than quiet solo tests. Its last news post is from 2023, though daily competitions were still running when we checked.

A full game played with the keyboard

What it is

An adventure from 2016 played entirely by typing: you ride a giant fox through a paper world that folds open as you explore, typing words to fight insects, solve puzzles and switch between kinds of magic.

Why it's like Monkeytype

Fast, accurate typing is the only control, so every hour you have spent on Monkeytype turns straight into skill here.

What's different

It is a story game with exploration and combat, not a measured test, and it costs money, though there is a free demo.

Programmers

What it is

Typing practice using real source code in more than ten programming languages, with a finger guide, alternative keyboard layouts, a heatmap of your mistakes, imports from GitHub and a code race.

Why it's like Monkeytype

A focused speed-and-accuracy drill with WPM results, custom text and a race, in the same spirit as Monkeytype's custom mode.

What's different

You type code full of brackets and symbols instead of English words, which trains a different set of keys.

Where to start

To check your speed somewhere else, TypeTest.io is the most like-for-like. To actually get faster, a few weeks of Keybr lessons will do more than another hundred tests. And when you want competition, TypeRacer has been racing typists since 2008.

Questions people ask

Is Monkeytype free?

Yes. Every mode and theme is free, and ads are a setting you can turn off. People who want to support it can donate, join its Patreon, buy merch or leave ads on.

Who made Monkeytype?

Miodec, who launched it on May 15, 2020, after sharing a prototype with a keyboard community on Reddit. It is open source on GitHub, and its About page says it is supported and expanded by many contributors.

Why is my WPM different on other sites?

Sites count differently. Monkeytype counts only the characters in correctly typed words, while others subtract uncorrected errors or count every keystroke, including capitals. Our page on how typing speed is measured explains the main methods.

What is a good typing speed?

In a large 2018 study of 168,000 volunteers by researchers at Aalto University, the average was about 52 words per minute, and the fastest typists passed 120. Speeds on short tests of common words tend to run higher than that.

Are there typing games instead of tests?

Yes. ZType and our own Type Storm turn words into targets, and paid games such as Epistory are played entirely by typing. Our typing games page lists the best of them.
